What is Acne?
Acne, also known as acne vulgaris (meaning common in Latin), is considered an obstructive disorder of the skin. It can present itself as whiteheads, blackheads, pustules or as more severe and painful cysts. While all of us might experience the occasional pimple, not everyone understands how it feels to have acne. The effects of severe or perpetual breakouts aren’t just skin deep and can lead to low self-esteem and self-confidence. The great news is that clear skin, and the confidence that comes with it, is within reach.
What causes acne?
Our skin contains oil glands (called sebaceous glands), which produce a protective oil (sebum) for our skin. The sebum reaches the surface of our skin through tiny channels called pores. Our hair grows up through these channels too, and the oil uses the hair to reach the surface. When all goes well, the skin produces just the right amount if sebum to protect our skin. If the oil gets trapped in the pore, it allows bacteria that normally live on the skin to grow in the pore opening. When this happens, pores become blocked and pimples develop. Factors such as hormones, some medications and diet (to a degree) can exacerbate acne.
